Health and Safety requires employees to undertake suitable and sufficient risk assessments; part of a risk assessors duties will include assessing manual handling risks.
Duties on an Employer include;
Employers shall as far as it is reasonably practicable, avoid the need for their employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work that involve a risk of them being injured. This is broken down in three key requirements.
1. Avoid - the need for hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable, e.g. use mechanical devices;
2. Assess - the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that can't be avoided; and
3. Reduce - the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practical.
